The Beta Blocker and Clonidine Protocol

Lesson 3
Risk Stratification

9. What if..?

Suppose you had the World’s Greatest Test and money to pay for it. Suppose that I magically invented the world's greatest test for perioperative cardiac morbidity as well as the money to pay for that testing. At the present time the U.S. does 600,000 cardiac cases a year. If you add another 2,000,000 (2 million) cases you are going to need more cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, and operating rooms. But more importantly, can it reduce the risk?

The Burning Question

If we Had the World's Greatest Test..

bullet U.S. 600,000 cardiac cases/year - need more surgeons
bullet Risk of major surgery before CABG 3%
bullet Risk of CABG 3% Mortality, 3% CVA
bullet Risk of major surgery after CABG 1.5%
bullet 3.2 + 1.5 > 3
