Lesson 2
3. PCM Risk Factors
Let's talk about risk factors. I was once told
that "The job of an anesthesiologist is to transfer anxiety
from the patient onto one's self." There are lots of approaches
to prevention of perioperative cardiac morbidity. There are clinical
predictors which try to calculate the operative risk. After much
fanfare and epidemiologic analysis, you will find that risk factor
number 7 is bad. That's great, thank you. Old, sick patients with
coronary artery and vascular disease, a recent myocardial infarction,
aortic stenosis, congestive failure, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia
and diabetes who still smoke are at risk. Wow, thanks! That's great.
Now they're scheduled for surgery tomorrow. What do I do? Worry
more?
