The Beta Blocker and Clonidine Protocol

Lesson 4
Lesson 4 - Beta Blockers

11. Patient Profiles: Intraoperative Hemodynamics

What about hemodynamic effects of preoperatively administered atenolol? Well, there weren't any differences in systolic or diastolic blood pressure. Anesthesiologists worry that giving a beta blocker prior to induction is going to have some catastrophic effect. There is NO evidence of such a problem. The heart rates are lower in the atenolol treated patients that is the only identifiable hemodynamic difference.
