I the first guy to tell you that beta blockers are good for patients
with heart disease? No. These are the studies that demonstrate
that beta blockers reduce the risk of death in patients with congestive
heart failure. Congestive heart failure is a high catecholamine
state. Beta blockers reduce the risk of death probably by blocking
the effects of those catecholamines. If you can give a beta blocker
to a patient with congestive heart failure, you can certainly
give one to a perioperative patient.
