10. Risk Reduction Thought Experiments:
Beta Blockers versus Seat Belts
Let's
give you another example Seat Belts. How many of you used a seat
belt when you drove to work today? How many of you risk stratified
the decision to use a seat belt for this drive to work? What?
No-one risk stratifies the decision to use a seat belt. Let me
see, it is raining, cold, I have had a beer, and I am going on
the freeway, I guess I will wear my seat belt. No, one does this.
They just put on the seat belt. What was the risk of the seat
belt? Zero. What was the cost of the seat belt? Zero. If the risk
and cost is low, safety is easy. BBAC is like a seat belt. It
is cheap, effective, and it should be applied to every patient
with cardiac risk.
